Strangers I Love: The Pug Walker

I have no qualms with stealing good ideas from other people. I've been reading a lot more random blogs this month, and I came across this great post from National Blog Posting Month participant Mitch Blum. His submission yesterday was a sort of love letter to a random elderly runner that he noticed in his neighborhood, and I just really liked the idea of writing about some of the random people that I see on a regular basis, know a bit about, but don't really know personally.

It's in that spirit that I want to say, I love you pug walker. I love the way you leisurely stroll around our neighborhood with your two pugs in tow, rain or shine, as if you were the king of all creation. Sometimes you have what I presume to be your wife with you, other times it's just "you and the boys" so to speak. Of course, I only guess that the pugs are both boys. I know one is named Murray, but I never caught the other's name. He must be the more well behaved of the two.

I love the way you sport that fantastic mustache. The early 21st century has not looked kindly on the mustache, and I appreciate that you have the confidence to carry it off like you do. You're in are rare class of men, along with Tom Selleck and Wilford Brimley, who can pull off the mustache sans beard.

I also love you not only for the dedication that goes into walking your dogs while it's raining, but for the braveness required to put them in matching yellow doggie raincoats. Not only that, but you take it a step further and don your own rain coat, also bright yellow, complete with bright yellow cap. Like the Gorton's fisherman, you wear what is required to get the job done.

So keep on walking those pugs, and I'll keep looking on in admiration, occasionally giving you a smile and a nod. It can be a tough world for a pug, and it makes me happy to know that yours are well exercised.
