Everyone has been so encouraging about my attempts to start running again! I've never gotten as much feedback to posts I've made as the running updates I've posted over the past month, and the encouragement has definitely helped get me through to week 4. One of the most consistent things I've heard from other people who have gone through the Couch to 5k training is that the first four weeks -- and especially the fourth week -- are the toughest. This week I learned that it is absolutely true.
January was doing several photo sessions in downtown Columbus this weekend, so we stayed over in the Renaissance hotel Sunday and Monday nights. It was definitely nice to stay in a fancy hotel, but one of the big things I was looking forward to was a little change of venue for my morning run. If you've been following my prorgress, I'm sure you know my usual route by now. I was looking forward to getting out of Clintonville and running downtown for a change.
Things went fairly well until the last 1/2 mile run, which I was simply out of fuel for. It was a nice run, and good to run along Civic Center Drive by the river, but I just couldn't finish. Attempt one: Fail.

On Wednesday I was ready to go! I knew that the run was going to be tough, I got a good night's sleep and woke up ready to kick week four's ass. I did a good round of stretching, put on my Pearl Jam Ten album, and started out. About 30 seconds into the third of four intervals, I ran out of steam again. Attempt two: Fail.

To be honest, this was actually my fourth attempt. I got up Friday morning to try again, got about 30 seconds into the first interval, and ran out of fuel. Just didn't get enough sleep the night before or something.
Saturday I came at it with a new plan. Week four is the week where the running intervals switch from time-based (1:30, 3 minutes, etc.) to distance-based (1/8 mile, 1/4 mile, etc.). So I looked up the appropriate times for the distances I should be running, put together a custom playlist with songs that last the exact amount of time I should run for each interval, and tried it again. That absolutely did the trick. I know I can't keep finding longer and longer songs to carry me through an actual 5k, but listening to music that I am familiar with and knew how close to the end I was definitely helped inspire me to keep going to the end of each song.

You can ignore the graph on this one: The GPS in my iPhone was really off that day... I was definitely not going 16mph at the end of my run.
So after a week of attempts, I did finally get a week 4 run under my belt. January and I are on our way out to Maine on vacation this week, and I think just to make sure I've got this down I'm going to repeat week 4, using custom workout mixes like I did on Saturday. This puts me a week behind my traning, and that 5k race isn't going to be pushed out, but I'm still going to see if I can be ready in time for race day.
For anyone interested, here's the music from my week four playlist. If you're reading this on Facebook or via RSS reader, you'll have to check over on my site to see the audio player below.
