Well, this is it. The final countdown. This Saturday evening my weeks of training culminate in my first ever 5k.  It's not your traditional 5k, however. It's the Gahanna Fright Nite 5k: "Scaredy cats not welcome," as the registration page clearly warns. It's been a few weeks since I've given an update on my training, so it's time for a pre-5k update.
I had a bit of a lapse again, as I ran out of my asthma medication for about a week while trying to get my doctor and pharmacy in contact with each other. Â With just a week to go before the race, I decided to skip the actual Couch to 5k program and just run for distance. I headed over to the bike / running path along the Olentangy, hoping to make it up to North Broadway at which point I could run home on High Street. Alas, I was a bit rusty and ended up doing a 5-minute run / 5-minute walk interval the whole time. Not the best attempt, but it was a start.

Up until now, I've been pouring over my music collection, trying to compile the best running mix I could for each run. This time, I threw it all out the window and just queued up the latest episode of NPR's This American Life, spotlighting the healthcare insurance industry. Â I wasn't sure how it would work out, if the reporting would be enough to keep me going, or if I really needed a driving beat to keep up the pace, but to my surprise it was a really good run. Â I'm going to have to run to podcasts more often.

This last run didn't start off very promising. I thought it would be fun to take Gus along. I'm running, he likes to run, how could we go wrong? I failed to take the Squirrel Factor into account, and we ended up turning back after about 10 minutes to drop him off in the back yard. Â After that test run, though, it was my strongest run yet. 4.25 kilometers -- my longest run yet -- and I managed to keep my pace at the same level I do for my shorter runs. Â I took a couple of walking breaks along the way, but only for about 200 meters at a time.

So, I may not be keeping up an amazing pace, but the distance should be totally doable. I've been told not to worry or focus on my time my first race, so I'm trying not to think about it. Just finish the race. Â If you're looking for something to do this Saturday evening, come out and wish me luck! Â It sounds like it's more than just a running event, so come check it out.
