You know those people in church who 'amen' and 'umhmm' EVERY SINGLE
THING the speaker says whether a verbal affirmation is appropriate or
not? I often wonder about the motivation behind this practice. Being
that I am not a person given to strong emotion, I have no context for
these outburtsts.
I sit in front of one such person in my Foundations to Bible Study class. I swear, this woman amen and mhmm's EVERY SINGLE THING the teacher says. Last class an explanation on how to evaluate broad structure of a paragraph received a rousing "AMEN!" Tonight the memorization skills of the ancient Hebrew people received just as hearty an exclamation. I mean I am just as happy as the next guy that Moses had some pretty good recall, but c'mon!
I guess I will just never understand this enthusiasm.
